Consultation on Draft Guidelines for the Use of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis with Human Leukocyte Antigen Testing

The closing date for submissions is 5 September 2008.

In 2007, ACART consulted on a range of issues, including preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). ACART has since recommended that the restriction on the use of PGD with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue typing for genetic conditions be removed, so that it may be used for conditions that are not inherited, for example, leukaemia. ACART also recommended that the possible use of the procedure be extended to benefit close relatives rather than restricted ot genetic siblings. These recommendations have been accepted by the Associate Minister of Health.

In May 2008, ACART provided advice to the Associate Minister of Health of PGD as required by section 38 of the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Act 2004.

ACART is now consulting on draft guidelines for PGD with HLA tissue typing. These guidelines will be used by the Ethics Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology in considering and determining applications to use the procedure.
